I get a lot of questions and compliments about my hair on Instagram, and last month, when I shared a review on Prose’s customized haircare products, I received even more questions. You can read the whole post here, for more info.
I thought it would be fun to address one of your biggest questions, and share some tips to achieve healthier hair!
Tips for Healthier Hair
1. Use moisturizing hair products without parabens or mineral oil.
These ingredients are controversial in the world of haircare, so I choose to avoid them. One thing I love about using Prose is I know I can trust the formula. On the Prose website, they list off a few products their formulas never include: parabens, mineral oil, dyes, and sulfates. These artificial ingredients may temporarily mask dry and damaged hair, but won’t provide a long-term solution, plus, mineral oil can clog pores on your scalp, which can lead to more problems down the road.
2. Healthy life habits = healthier hair
Did you know your health can have a direct effect on your skin/hair? Making sure you’re getting the right vitamins and nutrients is so important for your hair. I’m sure you’ve all heard of the wonders of Biotin for hair growth, but also incorporating foods like eggs, sweet potatoes, yellow peppers, fatty fish, and almonds can have an impact on your hair!
Additionally, things like diet sodas, sugary foods, and alcohol can have a negative effect on your scalp and hair!
3. Cool down your hair routine
Literally! If you remember 2 summers ago, I did a Summer of No Heat, and it saved my hair when I was going blonde!
It can be so tempting to blow your hair dry, because, well – it’s faster than air drying and your hair has more volume, and you know I am addicted to my curling wand. I’m sure it’s no surprise when I say heat styling can further damage weak hair.
If you can’t give up the heat-styling, make sure you use a heat protectant spray! Think of it like sunscreen for your hair before you head outside! Additionally, make sure you aren’t using the highest heat setting on your wand or straightener!
4. A mid-week mask
Once a week, when we don’t have anything going on, I set time aside to do a hair mask. Have you ever googled “hair mask” – there are MILLIONS. Not all hair masks are created equally. How do you know what one is right for you? I love the uniqueness of the Prose mask, as it is a pre-shampoo mask. This mask is not a deep conditioner, instead, it opens the cuticle of your hair to allow the natural active ingredients in Prose’s shampoo and conditioner to penetrate deeper. The other bonus of using Prose’s mask, is it is custom created by one of Prose’s stylists when you take their quiz. So you know you’re using a mask that is going to give you the results you’re looking for.
Adding the Prose mask with the shampoo and conditioner was a total game-changer for my hair, in terms of hydrating, softening, and strengthening my hair.
5. Upgrade your pillowcase
A lot can be said for getting your beauty sleep! I finally jumped on the satin pillowcase train this spring, after my stylist was equal parts shocked and appalled that I didn’t already. A silk or satin pillowcase can reduce hair breakage when you sleep because it reduces friction. Think about running your hand against cotton vs satin. Cotton feels a lot rougher, which means it’s going to cause more friction against your hair! This is the one I use, but I did find a less-expensive option here.
By being a little more conscious of your daily choices, and using Prose’s customized haircare system to target your hair concerns, you can make a huge impact and be on your way to healthier hair!
