I recently went blonde, which means this is my summer of more fun 😉 it also means I just put my hair through hell and need to be nice to it. Fun fact: once I went jet black with my hair, and had to have it stripped out. My hair broke and was about chin length. I vowed to never do anything crazy to my hair again. But then I met KL (@MermicornHair) and she changed my life, and my hair. While we took the change super slow, like, since March slow, I’m still extra cautious/worried of and for my hair.
Enter: the summer of no heat.
But the modified version. We do have a lot of events and parties, and while I’m learning to love my hair’s natural texture, sometimes I just want to feel more “done up”. My plan is this: air dry and embrace my hair Monday-Thursday. Style it Friday (for date night or an event), and then usually keep that style alive all weekend with a nice helping of dry shampoo and maybe a few touch up curls!
I’m putting together a few tips and tricks that make this process a lot easier, in case you want to finish the summer without heat with me!
1. Use the right products. If your hair gets too dried out from a salt spray, you’re gonna WANT to wash and condition and style it. Also, finding one that is lightweight enough is a trick, since you don’t want your hair to feel weighed down.
Hair Oil | Aquis Towel | Brush | Dry Shampoo | Salt Spray | Don’t Blow It
I love putting a tiny bit of rose hair oil on my ends at night. (let me stress that fact: A TINY AMOUNT. A little goes a long way. And I don’t put it near my roots, or else it’ll just make your hair look greasy! Keep it at the ends!!) It helps them from looking frizzy and keeps them moisturized!
Another trick I’ve learned is to spray your brush with dry shampoo, and brush it through! It gives amazing volume, and you don’t run the risk of getting that chalky deposit on the top of your head on day 3 of dry shampoo 😉 (Amika also makes a Dry Conditioner that is a life saver after a day on the boat or on the beach!)
My cousin actually recommended I try the Don’t Blow It styler after she heard about my no heat summer! I love it. I was a little hesitant since it’s a cream and not a spray. I’ve been using it since the 4th of July and I have nothing but good things to say to about it! The secret to this is to use it like a salt spray: instead of spraying, you rub/squeeze it into your hair with your hands, scrunch or twirl your hair, and go! Don’t brush it and don’t mess with it, just let it do its thing!
This hair towel was sent to me for review a while ago, and since I’ve gone blonde, I’ve been using it whenever I wash my hair. It’s basically a magical, absorbant towel that cuts drying time in half, and helps reduce frizz!
2. Timing. I touched on this above. Take a look at your schedule and see if there’s a pattern. Because, unless you have amazing hair, your natural texture is going to take some playing with/getting used to. For me, we have soccer Monday evening. So I wash my hair Monday night, and rock the scrunched/beachy look all week. Then style it at the end for seeing people 😉 I curled my hair for a party Saturday night, and used my favorite styling spray, and woke up Sunday and didn’t have to touch my curls!
3. Braids are your friend! If you do have an event or impromptu get together, you can easily braid your hair! It requires no heat and looks amazing. I did a quick tutorial on an upside down braid you can finish off with a topknot that is a summer go-to for me! Watch it here. A week or so ago, I did a crown braid around my head to keep flyaways tame, and I got a ton of compliments, but it was just my natural hair! You can watch my tutorial for this Dutch crown braid here!
My other go-to braid is a Dutch braid down the center of my head. Since it sits on top of your head, it looks so cool (and way more complicated than it really is!)
Have you done a summer of no heat styling? I would love to hear what you thought or if you have any life-changing products you’d recommend!
