We have this friend who is seriously the nicest person you’ll ever meet. Once I realized how quickly her birthday was approaching, my friend Tierney, Dave, and I started plotting. Once we had our gameplay, we got her fiancé on board. We were all going to blow off her birthday. Tierney told her she couldn’t make it into town, but arrived Friday night for planning. We spent Saturday morning thinking of ways to bum her out on her birthday. We didn’t write paragraphs of love on her Facebook or Instagram, we told her we were going to order the spiciest pizza ever (she hates spicy food), and we told her we’d be watching baseball when she came over. The finishing touch? Her fiancé let her know, as they were walking up my driveway, that he had money on this “baseball game” we were going to be watching.
She arrived to this:
Our best friend, stuffed into a large box. Talk about a surprise.
We also had cupcakes, festive drinks, and all kinds of food other than spicy pizza. The guys did insist on watching golf, though.
Her face when realized her fiancé hadn’t actually bet wedding planning money on a baseball game, and that no one was actually blowing off her birthday was priceless.
Another bonus of throwing a mini surprise party? Having a ton of balloons leftover to occupy the girls in the morning. Oh, and leftover birthday cupcakes.
