I am fairly new to audiobooks, but I love being able to “read” while getting some housework done at the same time. I am excited to share my first every audiobook reviews — of the last 4 books I listened to!
I also have to note that I listen with these ear buds, and absolutely love them. The color is the perfect neutral, and I love the shape of the case… but the buds themselves actually stay in my ears (unlike the Apple brand, which never fit me correctly!)
What You Did
**disclaimer, this book opens with a rape-accusation and could be potentially triggering. Personally, I loved the angle/way it was written, and would not consider it a “sensitive” book.
I listened to What You Did, and there were SEVERAL times when my mouth dropped open or I actually gasped out loud. I like to think I have a decent poker face, and really don’t remember a time while listening to an audiobook that my mouth actually fell open. My husband even asked me what was wrong!! 😬 This might be the highest compliment I have ever given a book, you guys!
There are so many twists and turns in this “who-done-it” rape case. As Ali struggles with defending her husband who is accused of rape, or her best friend… the woman accusing him.
This was SUCH a complex and fascinating story, and i was so sure I had it all figured out (twice) and was so wrong (twice)! I really liked the complicated friendships, and thought the characters had great depth and back stories.
The ending of What You Did was just 🤌🏻 I think it was the only person I didn’t suspect of doing something!! Of all 4 books I listened to, this was my favorite. It’s also available on Kindle Unlimited!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Wow. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was completely un-putdownable. I put off reading this for so long, and now all I have to say is, “wow!” I guess I am officially a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan.
I really loved that there was a mention of Mick Riva in The Seven Husbands (one of the “main” characters in Malibu Rising). He was also referenced in Evidence of the Affair (a very short TJR story) It kind of makes TJR’s books a whole universe, where the stories are all connected… but stand alone, too.
The Seven Husbands has a bit of everything. It dramatically explains Evelyn Hugos’ wild (albeit glamorous) life, her sordid affairs, and a bit of a twist at the end. This should be on your list ASAP.
The Angel Maker
I received an advance audio copy via NetGalley for an honest review*
I was a little worried The Angel Maker would be too intense for me (as a mother), but they weren’t super heavy of the serial killer/murder aspect, and it was more so the aftermath of a serial killer.
Perhaps it was the amount of characters in The Angel Maker, but it was A LOT. Listening on audio vs an actual book could have played a part in that, but there were a lot of names/people to keep track of. I felt like we bounced around and required some major concentration (which made multi-tasking a little tough!)
That said, I really did want to know what happened – and continued listening. It was a pretty climactic ending that I enjoyed! 3.5 stars for me for The Angel Maker!
The Soulmate
I received an audio ARC via NetGalley for an honest review*
Now, I know this is a BIT of a teaser, since The Soulmate doesn’t release until April 4, but preorder it/reserve it from the library — you don’t want to miss out on this twisty story by Sally Hepworth!
This domestic thriller had me hooked from the get-go. Hepworth really gets you into the story with the complex characters and twisty plot in The Soulmate. Character development was top-notch, and you instantly cared about Pippa/her family.
Gabe and Pippa bought a home near a well-known suicide jump on picturesque cliffs. Over the years, Gabe has talked down 7 would-be jumpers. He is somewhat known in their region for this, and he is everyone’s hero. Buuuuuuuut The Soulmate begins when Gabe isn’t able to save a recent jumper, and Pippa can’t be sure what she really saw. He wouldn’t. Would he? Soon she’s questioning everything – can she really trust Gabe? I thought it was SO well done when we dragged Pippa into the mud! Nobody’s hands were clean and that was just fantastic.
The Soulmate closed with a few little twists that I really enjoyed and didn’t see coming! 👏🏻👏🏻
