At first, I blamed it on Pregnancy Brain. Something about blood flow and nesting making me super forgetful. Which is kind of ironic, since there’s that phrase: an elephant never forgets, and I, personally, have never felt more like a forgetful, swollen elephant than I did during my last few weeks of each pregnancy. I haven’t been pregnant for a good six months, and let me tell you, it’s morphed into full-blown Mom Brain. Here are a few examples:
- Getting all the way to Target, only to realize my purse is sitting on the counter at home.
- I forgot I had set my Red Bull on the roof of my car…until it came sliding down the windshield, and onto my hood when I stopped at the end of the driveway.
- I’ve promised the girls fish sticks, and then got super pissed 30 minutes later when the oven still hadn’t preheated, and the kids were having a meltdown…only to realize I never started the oven.
- Related: I’ve put wet clothes in the dryer and forgotten to turn it on, and assumed the dryer was broken.
- I frantically searched the house and the yard for the dog, calling his name over and over, and finally called David, and told him I lost the dog (near tears), and he just laughed at me, and reminded me he took the dog to get groomed. (Dave still laughs about this one!)
But I know the all words to the PJ Masks theme song.
There are times I walk into the kitchen, and spin around aimlessly, looking for something to remind me of what I was about to do. I’m over here, trying to keep three little humans happy, fed, and alive… while I’m frantically searching for my phone, only for my girlfriend (who I was talking to) to remind me that I was currently using it. Or there’s a morning where I remember we are late for an appointment, but we were busy having a Taylor Swift dance party, while building a boat out of blankets and tutus, so we rush out the door still in tutus… only to realize the appointment isn’t for another hour (true story). It’s stressful and sometimes downright embarrassing. Sometimes, I feel like a total mess when I can’t remember what I was about to say, but that’s just it. Motherhood is messy. But it’s a perfect mess. It wouldn’t be nearly as fun without the shitshow of slowly loosing your mind – and besides, what would David and I laugh about that night after the kids are asleep?
So. Since I haven’t forgotten one of the kids at home or anything too ridiculous, let’s keep laughing, build that boat, and keep twirling in our tutus.

You are not alone. We have all gone the way of “mom brain” as you call it. Be thankful you haven’t forgotten the kids in all you have to do. I agree with your friebd…keep laughing and enjoy the ride, one day they will all be gone, as are mine and you will have great memories to keep you going.
